Nigeria rounded off their AFCON qualification quest with a resounding 6-0 win against Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo.
The 60,000-capacity Godswill Akpabio stadium (aka the Nest of Champions) was full to the brim as fans witnessed the Super Eagles deliver a masterclass.
Central to that resounding win was none other than Victor Osimhen who netted a hat-trick while Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi and Samuel Chukwueze also chipped in with goals to complete half a dozen.

Victor Osimhen\’s historic performance
Osimhen scored his first goal in the 14th minute, connecting to a cross from a corner kick with a header to give Nigeria the lead.
His second was from the penalty spot, after being brought down by the Sao Tome goalkeeper, Osimhen converted to increase Nigeria\’s lead to four in the 69th minute.
Ten minutes later, the Napoli superstar completed his hat-trick with a simple one-on-one finish after being played through neatly by Chukwueze to make it five.
Chukwueze would then round off the scoring with a well-taken goal of his own in the 84th minute but it was Osimhen who got all the plaudits for the hat-trick and rightly so.

Records broken and set by Victor Osimhen
The hat-trick took Osimhen\’s tally in the qualifiers to 10 goals, making him the highest goalscorer not only in this series but in the history of African qualifiers.
Osimhen also moved closer to becoming the all-time topscorer in Super Eagles history, the 24-year-old now has 20 goals in 27 games for Nigeria.
His hat-trick moved him up three places on the all-time scorers list above the likes of Sunday Oyarekhua, Obafemi Martins and Ike Chukwueze Uche.
As it stands, only Yakubu Aiyegbeni (21 goals), Segun Odegbami (23 goals) and the late great Rashidi Yekini (37 goals) have scored more for the Super Eagles than Osimhen.

With all the aforementioned accolades and achievements of Osimhen with the national team so far, it would not be an exaggeration to say he\’s already among the very best in Nigeria\’s history even at the tender age of 24.
Osimhen on the way to GOAT status
With 20 goals in 27 games, Osimhen already has by far the best goal ratio in Super Eagles\’ history, painting a picture of efficiency and high-volume productivity.
Legacy discussions for footballers will mostly always favour the retired as one can better assess the full scope of their careers and then make the judgement.
But with Osimhen\’s current trajectory, it is not unreasonable to expect him to retire someday as the greatest striker Nigeria ever produced.
Surpassing the late great Rashidi Yekini will take some doing, Osimhen is still 17 goals short of touching number one.
However considering that he\’s already scored 20 times for Nigeria in less than four years, imagine how much more he could achieve over the next decade.

And this is not just based on his national team exploits only, Osimhen has attained a level of reverence at Napoli that no Nigerian striker before him managed at the highest level of the game.
He is the reigning Serie A top scorer, after scoring 26 goals in 32 league games last season to become Capocannoniere.
If he continues on this current trajectory, there is no doubt that Osimhen will be the greatest in Nigerian football history when it’s all said and done but even if he retires today, he has done enough to be in the conversation at the very least.
